The spokesperson of the Ogun state police command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, has warned Nigerians against sharing false information to the police or any public authority,
In a post shared on X, Babaseyi stated that it is a criminal offence under the Nigerian law to serve false information to the public.
He said under the Criminal Code Act, anyone who knowingly gives false information to mislead a public officer commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment, fine, or both.
He further stated that the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 also prescribes penalties for intentionally spreading false information electronically, including on social media.
Babaseyi's command is currently handling the case of Mirabel who falsely claimed she was r@ped by an unknown man.
